Are You Allergic To Eyelash Glue? This Solution Is For You!

Eyelash extensions can level up your overall look for a good 2-3 weeks. But did you know that lash glue on extensions could harm you in the short and long-term?

Redness and swelling due to severe infections can happen as a result of allergic reaction.

Can eyelash glue damage your eyes? Read on to know more about it.

  • Redness and irritation. Many types of lash glue contain hazardous chemicals, including paraben, ammonia, formaldehyde, lead, and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfanate - which can cause skin irritation, redness and swelling.
  • Allergic reaction. Although it is rare, it can happen at any time and lead to allergic contact dermatitis which is “a common inflammatory skin condition characterised by “redness and itchy lesions” that occur after contact with a foreign substance”. (According to American Family Physician Journal)  Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by an immune response where the body overreacts to an allergen. In this eyelash glue case, the allergen is often cyanoacrylate, an ingredient found in super glue. It makes glue used for lash extensions dry fast. Exposing the skin to an allergen leads to a delayed hypersensitivity reaction which, in turn, causes skin conditions such as redness and itching. Allergic contact dermatitis can make you lose your natural eyelashes too, even if they usually regrow after some time.
  • Eye infection. It can happen as a result of dirt and bacteria trapped in glue while applying lash extensions. That’s why it is important to find a well trained beautician to ensure safety of the procedure.
  • Loss of natural lashes. After the procedure, you have to clean your lashes carefully otherwise the tension that glue and false lashes put on natural lashes can cause them to fall out. Although in many cases lashes grow back in six to eight weeks, too much pulled out lashes can cause a condition called traction alopecia, and if you don't intervene soon enough, the hair loss may be permanent. You still have to clean your lashes regularly though. According to Journal of Medical and Biomedical Sciences, “Eyelash extension could irritate the eyelid or clog follicles in the eyelid as well as pull out eyelashes during removal (Sachdeva and Prasher, 2008). The procedure does not allow frequent washing of the eyelids which could result in bacterial and/or fungal infection seen as ocular discharge with conjunctivitis and eyelid diseases (Sanford-Smith, 1986).”

To avoid all these dangers of eyelash glue, doctors recommend either just getting your lashes done by a professional beautician which use only reputable lash glue - with costly service - or don’t do it at all.

The good news is you don’t have to do either of those because now there’s a safer alternative to eyelash glue and more budget-friendly which you can apply and remove anytime you want: Emelica Magnetic Lashes and Liner.

With the help of magnetic eyeliner that you simply swipe on your lids, and a pair of lashes which have tiny lightweight magnets on them, your makeup routine will be faster and easier. Because the lashes attach directly to your eyelid, there is no traction applied on your natural lashes. They are completelycweatherproof and tested in a cruelty-free lab to ensure the safety (Read more about how safe is Emelica Magnetic Eyeliner here).
